Kapalong marks 64th year founding anniversary


KAPALONG DAVAO DEL NORTE- The Municipality of Kapalong having declared as a regular and distinct  municipality by virtue of Executive Order  No. 151 signed by then President Elpedio R. Quirino last August 1, 1948 celebrated its 64th year founding anniversary with a weeklong festivity which started last July 24, 2012 and culminated on August 1.

A blood donors’ program  was initiated by the Municipal Health Office to take cognizance of the contribution of  Kapalong blood donors in strengthening its  campaign of ensuring adequate supply of blood thereby  making the municipality as 2nd time hall of fame awardee in the National Sandugo Award.

The blood letting and free medical, dental and maternal health care continued in the following days with priority given to the residents of Kapalong's barangays.

An ecumenical praise spearheaded by the Kapalong Ministerial Fellowship, a group of pastors and different church leaders in town with the aim of coming together despite of  different religious beliefs to praise and give thanks to the Almighty for the bountiful blessings bestowed to the people of the municipality.

This was complemented by the “Hinang”, a tribal ritual of thanksgiving done by the tribal high priest and datus at the Amphi Theater which indeed showcased and fostered the preservation of our cultural heritage.

The first ever grassroots course and football festival sponsored by the Philippine Football Federation and the Davao del Norte Football Association  in coordination with the Office of the Mayor was launched at the Maniki Central Elem. School ground highlighting the 1st Edgardo L. Timbol Football Festival participated in by   some football teams in the province.

Prior to the festival, 48 football coaches were given seminar so as to equip them with the necessary skills in handling such event and basically  to enhance their coaching knowledge and skills which they eventually employed in the football tournament in the succeeding two-day festival.

The Search for Miss Teen Kapalong was also one of the highlights which was participated in by all the 11 high schools in the municipality wherein Angelica B. Candido of Kapalong National High School was crowned Miss Teen Kapalong 2012.

Inter-high school cheer dance competition and basketball tournament, mountain bike circuit race, dart, taekwondo and inter-LGU volleyball tournament and the basketball friendship game of the LGU officials between the officials of the municipality of Sta. Josefa, Agusan del Sur  were  some of the added attraction along with the Chess Tournament sponsored by Congressman Anthony Rafael G. del Rosario,  the Palarong Pinoy of Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario, the PROGLAD Kapalong volleyball tournament sponsored by ABC President Ma. Theresa R. Timbol and the Couple Run of the Liga ng Mga Barangay.

The Agriculture department had its Farmers’ Day with Free Techno Clinic and Tilapia Fingerlings dispersal.  Dress My Chicken contest for the 14 barangays added the merriment of the event.

The celebration culminated on August 1 with an anniversary program right after the multi-sectoral parade and the ceremonial opening of the mini museum featuring gallery of old pictures which depicted Kapalong in the old days to include its first set of government officials. 

The anniversary program became more festive and colorful as the barangays showcased the 1st AGR inter barangay indak indak showdown which theme focused on banana festival.  Brgy. Tiburcia got the 1st prize of P30,000.00, and the Best Festival Costume and Best in Choreography ; Gabuyan got the 2nd prize of P20,000.00 and the Best Festival Music while Semong got the 3rd prize of P10,000.00.

OIC of the Office of the Governor, Vice Governor  Victorio R. Suaybaguio, Jr., conveyed to the people the governor’s message of inspiration giving significance to the anniversary’s theme, “Maayong Pangggamhanan ug Nagkahiusang Katawhan; Tinubdan sa Padayon ng Kalambuan”

Gracing the commemoration day with the local officials were Board Members Shirley Belen R. Aala, Alfredo D. De Veyra, Antonio M. Lagunzad, Vicente Eliot, Sr., Atty. Raymond Joey D. Millan, 60IB Commanding Officer LTC Lewellyn R. Binasoy  and  Sto. Tomas Vice Mayor Daniel Batusalem.  (cj - MIO Kapalong)
